My husband is a marathon runner and just received an email from his coach that I wanted to share with you all. Copied and pasted below. No need to reply back. Walking or running, we all just need to be careful! 🩷Subject: Women and RunningGood morningNot a great email to send on a sunny Thursday morning, but it is running as we know it for women. Guys, share this with the women in your life too if they are out running or walking.In the past week there have been 4 women in our surrounding area that have been attacked while running on their own. Some early morning in Columbia, two mid day in the Frederick area and one on the B&A early evening, and of course the young girl in GA. From some police reports, they think it may be the same man in Frederick and now has moved to the paths in Columbia.So.... • NO HEADPHONES - or use the ones you can still hear with but keep the volume down so you can hear what is happening around you • Pay attention when you are running - we focus on cars, things in the roads, etc but pay attention to the people you see up in front of you coming at you and even behind you • Vary your routes and times - I am terrible at this!! Running the same place around the same time is not smart - if you wanted to find me you could - so time to change that up! • Try to not run alone on the trails, I know some of you love your B&A and you know so many out there, but be careful if you do run alone. And when we get comfortable in one place we don't pay as much attention. • Carry something! Phone for sure, a loud noise maker, whistle, mace, something to help you be seen and heard. • Let someone know where you are going, how long you plan to be out there, and when you return. • DO NOT share your location on STRAVA - nobody you know needs to see where you run every day, they can ask you. Or keep STRAVA private to friends only. • Apple Airtags - we have a few runners who have them on them at all times so their family knows where they are. • Share your Garmin route with your family or a friend. • Run aware and be carefulNot the best news but a good reminder that we need to pay better attention all the time.
